Michael Lucas: Industry Adulation of Brent Corrigan’s Underage Performances “Revolting”

From http://sxnews.e-p.net.au- In the world of gay porn, very few stories have generated as much controversy as that which surrounds 22-year-old porn star Brent Corrigan. And it is this scandal, and the precedent it sets in the gay porn industry, that has actor and director Michael Lucas speaking out.

The story begins in 2005 when Brent Corrigan (real name Sean Lockhart), already a popular performer thanks to a string of bareback-themed movies by porn studio Cobra Video, publicly claimed he falsified identification documents in order to appear in adult films. It was revealed that Corrigan’s early films were made when he was just 17. The statement ignited a storm of controversy with many outlets voluntarily removing Corrigan’s films from their shelves because of concerns surrounding child pornography. The blogosphere went into overdrive as debate heated up over Corrigan’s age.

Needless to say, while some winced at Corrigan’s revelations, it also elevated his notoriety. He continued to make adult films and is currently one of the industry’s most popular performers. Most recently, Corrigan scooped three accolades at the 2009 GayVN awards, the porn industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, which included gongs for ‘Best Twink Film’ and ‘Best Bottom’.

Lucas, himself a porn actor and head of his own porn empire, Lucas Entertainment, says that the events which unfolded from the Corrigan controversy sets an “awful precedent” for the industry.

“I don’t speak out against Brent Corrigan, I speak out against the industry’s desire to hire performers who have performed underage and forged their IDs,” he tells SX.

“[Corrigan’s] involvement in child pornography has made him a name and instead of being disgusted by this, they are mesmerized by it. That is revolting. There are so many other twinks that are just as good or better but have not been involved in such a horrific scandal to get their names out there. And this made me say that those judges are as responsible and as sleazy as Corrigan and his paedophile fans.”

There are those who argue that Corrigan is now over the age of 18 and is of legal age to perform in adult films, but Lucas says that by honouring Corrigan, the industry is encouraging other young people to follow in his footsteps.

“By now this story is becoming very well known and very well publicised and young guys will look at this scandal as a positive career move to get noticed,” he says.

Lucas also hit back at those who say that the judges were merely recognising Corrigan’s talents and giving credit where credit is due.

“What type of talent exactly? The ability to get fucked? There are a billion guys who know how to take it up the ass. I never saw his movies but I can’t imagine that there is anything groundbreaking. The whole hype is particularly upsetting because Corrigan’s claim to fame was his age and illegal acts. He is thriving off this scandal.””

Lucas is, of course, no stranger to controversy himself. His 2007 film, Michael Lucas’ La Dolce Vita, which took home a record fourteen GayVN Awards that year, attracted a lawsuit from the property owners of the Fellini original on which the film took its inspiration from. “This lawsuit is completely out of line,” Lucas said at the time. “I think they’re making fools of themselves. Nobody can be confused and think they’re buying Fellini’s movie by buying mine. It’s a sex flick.” Two years prior, another of his films, Michael Lucas’ Dangerous Liaisons became notable not just for its content, but for its list of cameos which included Boy George, RuPaul, Amanda Lepore and Graham Norton.

Lucas is also an accomplished public speaker, with regular speaking engagements in universities and symposiums across the US, as well as a noted writer. Many of his opinion editorials published in the New York Blade have ruffled feathers in many a sphere: religious, political and entertainment.

This is not the first time Lucas has spoken out about issues affecting the porn industry. In the past, he has been a vocal campaigner against drug use and, like fellow industry heavyweight, Chi Chi LaRue, is a strong advocate for safe sex, both within porn and the wider GLBT community.

“This is my livelihood and people in this industry should be involved in the protection and positive promotion of what we are offering,” he says. “There has long been a stigma attached to this business and I am fighting hard to improve the reputation of what we do.””

As an outcome to the Corrigan debate, Lucas is adamant on what he wants. “I believe anyone who performs underage and utilises forged IDs should be banned – absolutely.””

And as divisive as his views might be, Lucas has no qualms about the potential implications they can have on his company or career. “I think the cause is more important than any repercussions on my company. Not always do awards translate into sales. Sales are driven by the knowledge that the brand is high quality – my movies will speak for themselves.””
