Tampa, Florida – Joe Redner has dueled with chairs, fought strip club raids and waged political campaigns. And now his story is detailed in a documentary called “Strip Club King: The Story of Joe Redner.”
Director Shelby McIntyre says the choice of Redner was a natural. “(He’s) interesting, dynamic and who is going to have a national appeal and hands down it’s Joe Redner,” says McIntyre.
Redner says he had no qualms about opening up his life to the cameras. “I’m not worried about someone putting something bad on the TV or in a documentary, because I don’t think there is anything,” says Redner sitting in his Tampa office, just a short distance from the Mons Venus.
Filmmakers say the documentary shows a side of Redner that most people don’t know. “He’s actually really shy,” says co-producer Chris Woods. “You see him on TV and he’s all yelling on public access, but he’s really a quiet guy.”
The documentary’s Florida premiere takes place Friday night at Channelside Cinemas. And if you go, you could find yourself sitting right next to Redner; he still hasn’t seen the whole film.
“Some of it embarrasses me,” says Redner. “I look at it and shake my head.”
And as for the film’s title “Strip Club King,” Redner will wear the crown proudly, but says he never came up with that title. “I’ve never called myself a strip club king.”
