DAYTONA BEACH — The chain-link fence surrounding the Pink Pony on Ridgewood Avenue was locked Friday evening. Word is, it’s closed for good.
In the wake of the arrests of a dancer and two other employees Thursday night, a U-Haul sat in the back parking lot Friday night — office-type chairs appeared to wheel themselves out the open back door. Although glimpses were caught of men moving things from inside, no one would come outside and talk about why the club may be closing.
No one answered the phone, but the outgoing message still says, “If you want to see girls in bikinis, go to the beach. If you want to see naked girls, come to the Pony.”
John Kap, an officer of the business, told TV reporters Friday that revenues were down and it wasn’t worth the hassle to keep the doors open, given the city’s ban on public nudity.
Repeated attempts to reach representatives from the club were unsuccessful Friday night.
Thursday night’s undercover sting was the second within the month. Two dancers and the manager on duty were arrested Aug. 2.
Though the strip club has closed its doors, it could still be eligible for code enforcement fines — which could be as high as $5,000 a day — dating to March 11.
“It’s up to the special magistrate to decide (the fine amount),” city spokeswoman Susan Cerbone said Friday night. She was unaware the club had closed.
City laws require dancers in clubs with alcohol to wear bikinis, not G-strings and pasties. Nudity is permitted in clubs that do not serve alcohol and are located on the far west side of the city, but none exist.
In February, the U.S. Supreme Court refused a request by Lollipops Gentleman’s Club on Grandview Avenue to review the city’s nudity and adult business zoning laws, ending a seven-year legal fight.
The next meeting of the special magistrate is scheduled for Sept. 9.
