SALT LAKE CITY from www.abc4.com – Thousands of LDS faithful will gather in downtown Salt Lake City this weekend for General Conference. One of the topics that may be discussed is the effect of pornography on families.
The LDS Church just unveiled a new anti-porn website. The site is the first of it’s kind, providing resources for members dealing specifically with porn and addiction.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has addressed the issue of pornography in past conferences. As LDS faithful gather again this weekend, they have a new tool in the fight against porn. The website, combatingpornography.org, was launched this week. The website was created by LDS Family Services, and is aimed at helping Church members avoid pornography and break addictions.
The site offers talks and videos from LDS Prophets and Apostles as well as clinical experts. Counselors say the website is a step in the right direction.
William Green, a substance abuse counselor said, “The more resources anyone has especially in any venue that speaks to the individuals psyche and the way that they can wrap their minds around it absolutely.”
Green says pornography is pervasive, and addiction to it is a very real problem. He says pornography rewires the brain like a drug, making it difficult to make rational decisions.
“It’s lower functioning, lower cognition so they are unaware. A lot of the time that it is overriding the conscious thought process,” said Green.
The LDS website includes four sub-categories: prevent, recognize, overcome, and support. Green says recovery from pornography addiction is a choice, and is possible with education and support. He also says it’s not an easy addiction to break, 60% will return to the behavior in their first attempts to recover.
