from www.freep.com – A Detroit strip club suing Gov. Rick Snyder [pictured] filed a federal suit in Detroit today to overturn a new state law that requires adult entertainment establishments to literally go by the numbers on billboards advertising their businesses.

The Penthouse Club charged that the bill, signed into law in late December by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, violates the club’s constitutional right to freedom of expression and due process by restricting signs on its business to words, numbers and trademarks — but no pictures.

The club, which put a sign on its building in 2008 featuring a woman in a short skirt, said the law leaves it “with virtually no means of effectively communicating its very identity to a majority of the public.” The law took affect last week.

The city of Detroit passed a similar ordinance last year that strip clubs have challenged in court.

Today’s suit was assigned to U.S. District Judge John Corbett O’Meara.
