Philadelphia – from www.nbcphiladelphia.com – A church and residents near an adult video store in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia are fighting against an electronic upgrade to the store’s 110-foot billboard.
Risque Video, which specializes in pornographic films and sex toys, was granted a variance to install a LED digital billboard on the 4800 block of James Street in April. Permission to build the double-sided board that would flash and change at four to six-second intervals was given despite the fact that zoning code laws prohibit billboards with flashing lights within 1,000 feet of residences, according to PlanPhilly.com.
Backed by the Society Created to Reduce Urban Blight (SCRUB), neighbors and the Baptist Worship Center across the street got an attorney and filed an appeal to fight the flashing lights of the proposed sign.
A judge ruled in favor of the church, the neighbors and SCRUB on Aug. 4, sending the case back to the ZBA that initially granted the variance.
The final showdown between the porn store and the people will take place at a Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing on Aug. 18.
