from www.floridatoday.com – Two half-dressed girls under the age of 18 were removed from a Cocoa strip club late Friday after a distraught mother called police to report fears her daughter was dancing there.
Police were told the girl was 14, but when they went to investigate the complaint at Playmates strip club in Cocoa, they discovered two girls, ages 15 and 17, dancing before club patrons.
“They weren’t topless, but they were scantily clad,” said Cocoa Officer Barbara Matthews.
No arrests were made, but the girls were removed from the premises and an investigation into the club is continuing, Matthews said.
“We checked records of the club and there’s a lot of documentation missing, including on the girls,” Matthews said. “Our investigators are still looking into the club, and we’ve also involved code enforcement and DCF was called on the family.”
You must be at least 18 to dance in the club, Matthews said.
Playmates is at 518 Industry Road in Cocoa. Matthews said the club has been subject of previous police calls, though it’s been at least a couple of years.
In June 2005, an undercover sting by Cocoa police and Brevard County sheriff’s agents led to the arrest of 11 people in connection with charges of violating adult-entertainment laws, prostitution, drugs and lewd acts.
Matthews said the 15-year-old’s mom called police Friday evening and said she found out her daughter was dancing at Playmates. And though someone at the club told her that her daughter was there, she was not allowed to enter the business, Matthews said. That prompted the call to police.
In April 2008, club owner Tavas Siram sued Cocoa for the right to have his dancers perform without any clothes on.
Later that year, city officials approved changes to the city’s adult club ordinance that allows such clubs to stay open until 2 a.m., instead of 11 p.m., and allows dancers to wear G-string panties instead of “French-cut” underwear. However, no settlement has been reached with the Playmates Club.
