New South Wales- from www.illawarramercury.com.au – Thousands of pornographic DVDs were seized earlier this month by police during simultaneous raids on two Illawarra adult stores.
About 10.30am yesterday Lake Illawarra detectives swooped on The Adult Warehouse store at Warrawong and Adult Central at Albion Park Rail following a complaint from the public.
Officers spent much of the day sorting through thousands of DVDs, many of which were placed in boxes and removed from the sites.
Detectives working at the Warrawong store left the location on at least two occasions to retrieve even more boxes and packing tape.
A number of disappointed customers arriving at the store throughout the afternoon were forced to leave empty-handed upon finding the building’s front roller door closed.
Acting Inspector Gary Castles said police believed the movies seized from each of the sites did not comply with the Classification of Publication, Films and Computer Games Act.
“It’s illegal in NSW to sell DVDs that have a certain rating,” he said.
Selling X-rated movies is illegal in NSW however they can be possessed for personal use.
Earlier this year the Australian Sex Party called for the legal contradiction to be resolved.
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon echoed the request in June, stating it was “completely illogical for something to be legal to own, but illegal to sell”.
Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
No charges have yet been laid.
