Louisiana- A Shreveport man who ran an internet business that distributed thousands of pornographic movies containing violent sex acts and bestiality pleaded guilty today to federal obscenity charges.
Federal agents said the operation was so profitable it made more than $2.5 million.
Daniel Smart, 33, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Shreveport this afternoon to selling obscene videos out of his home. There were no allegations of child pornography.
Last summer, state and local police raided Smart’s home in Shreveport’s Queensborough neighborhood and seized thousands of videos and bank records after receiving a tip he was producing bestiality videos.
The raid led investigators to websites selling movies containing bondage and bestiality, authorities said.
“We were going to handle it locally until the customs and postal officials realized they had enough stuff leaving and going across state lines where they could interest (federal prosecutors) in it,” said Caddo Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland.
Homeland Security agent James Podboy testified authorities intercepted videos headed for Canada, England and Thailand.
Authorities said a website described a movie about a woman named Kinky Celine, who was supposed to be kidnapped and tortured by several men. The site asked for volunteers to be in the movie. State Police said their on-line tip came from someone who was afraid a girl was going to get killed as part of a “snuff film.”
State Police said Smart posed as Kinky Celine to try to get people to buy the merchandise.
Investigators said they found thousands of videos, DVDs, VCRs, computers and satellite equipment in Smart’s house on Frederick Street.
Smart faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced October 3.
