Keithsburg, IL – The disclaimer on the door leaves little to the imagination of what customers might find inside Bikini’s Bar and Grill. The city confirms that servers are topless and according to local ordinance, that passes.
Mayor Jim Stewart said, “At this time we don’t have anything that we can do to the liquor license.”
The ordinance describes a bar with adult entertainment as “a striptease club,” one whose business sells “sexually explicit material, shows, or other exhibitions.”
According to the Dispatch/Argus newspaper, Bikinis’ owner Guy Brenkman said that “Topless does not trigger adult use,” and that “totally nude is what triggers adult use.”
Regardless of laws some people in the close-knit town say the bar is bringing down the morals.
Meanwhile Brenkman’s other businesses continue to flourish. He owns the Riverside Motel across from Bikini’s and numerous shops downtown.
But not everybody opposes the lounge. James Campbell has lived in Keithsburg his entire life. The topless bar just yards away from his home goes unnoticed.
“They mind their own business and do their own business and I do mine,” said Campbell.
While some people question Brenkman’s operations the show will most likely go on. Mayor Stewart says as long as Bikini’s follows the ordinance the city’s hands are tied.
“According to my legal council there has to be other activity that happens with the topless,” said Stewart.
