NY- The rock-and-roll road manager behind Paul Simon’s historic Graceland tour was stabbed to death yesterday in his tony upper East Side apartment, allegedly by his live-in girlfriend, cops said.
Danny Harrison, 57, was stabbed numerous times with a kitchen knife in what a neighbor described as a “raucous fight” just before noon with his girlfriend, Kathleen Connors [pictured], 37.
Neighbors said Connors was covered in blood when cops removed her in handcuffs from the E. 89th St. building, between East End and York Aves. in the shadow of Gracie Mansion.
“Her jeans were soaked in blood. Her feet were bare and they were covered in blood,” said neighbor Jitu Inamdar, 46. A 23-year-old neighbor said she was startled by the sounds of furniture being knocked over and screaming coming from Harrison’s sixth-floor apartment.
“It was a horrible, raucous fight,” said the neighbor, who called 911. “It was definitely not solo, it wasn’t just her on him.”
A police source said Connors and Harrison had been dating about four months, and that she moved in with him a month ago. “She seemed very nice. I’m surprised,” Nick Mrkulic, the superintendent of Harrison’s building said of Connors.
Mrkulic said Connors recently told him that Harrison had gone through a rough breakup with his former girlfriend. “She said, ‘I’m going to take care of him now,’ ” Mrkulic said.
But a police source said Connors also had a shady past and a record that included arrests for prostitution. Harrison’s 38-year-old daughter said her father had seemed “pretty happy” with his new love.
“He told me recently about her, that he wanted me to meet her,” said the daughter, who requested anonymity.
Harrison, who had two children and four step children, had recently produced cooking shows for the Food Network, including episodes of “Iron Chef.” But he was better known as road manager for acts ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Boz Scaggs and Billy Joel.
“This is devastating news,” said Harrison’s former business partner, Mark Sioag. Harrison, who also had a master’s degree in psychology, was the main behind-the-scenes man for Simon’s 1981 Central Park concert, which drew more than 400,000 fans.
In 1987, Harrison was the road manager for Simon’s Graceland tour, which featured South African musicians taking a historic stand against apartheid. His relationship with Simon ended in 1997, when he was caught stealing money from the musician, a source said.
In a 2003 interview, Harrison said his job included everything from setting up sound systems to ironing Boz Scaggs’ silk trousers.
“It’s difficult and tragic,” Eileen Cavallaro of Kings Park, L.I., one of Harrison’s ex-wives. “He loved his kids – it’s just very sad.”
