Segpay, a digital payment processing company, announced its expansion into Australia with the establishment of Segpay Australia on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. This move positions Segpay as one of the first high-risk payment processors to have a physical presence in the Australian market.
Australian Market Entry and Leadership
Segpay Australia will begin servicing online merchants in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has appointed Sam O’Connell as the Managing Director of its Australian operation and has hired local support staff. O’Connell will oversee Segpay’s Australian operations and work to develop relationships within the local payment and fintech industries.
O’Connell brings experience from the payments and financial services industries. Before joining Segpay, he served as a V.P. in the payments arm of a major U.S. bank and also practiced as an attorney in a private law firm. Ash Said has also joined Segpay’s Australian sales team to support merchant growth and strengthen relationships with merchants in the region.
Cathy Beardsley, Segpay Global CEO, stated that establishing a local operation in Australia is a significant step in Segpay’s growth. Beardsley noted a need for payment partners who understand the challenges faced by high-risk industries, and expressed that O’Connell’s experience and knowledge will help build a foundation to provide local merchants with support.
O’Connell commented that Segpay has an opportunity to offer something different to the Australian market. He added that with the company’s global experience and a local team, they are building relationships with Australian merchants to support their growth.
Addressing Market Needs and Growth
The expansion into Australia aims to address the limited payment processing options available from traditional providers for merchants operating in highly regulated industries. Segpay’s Australian operation combines local expertise with over two decades of global payments experience.
According to Australia Post’s 2026 eCommerce Report, Australians spent A$82.6 billion online in 2025, representing a 14% year-over-year increase. This highlights the country's growing digital economy and the increasing number of businesses expanding online.
Segpay, founded in 2005 and headquartered in Deerfield Beach, Florida, operates as a global payment platform. It provides payment solutions for e-commerce and subscription services within the financial technology sector, including payment facilitator, direct merchant accounts, and online payment gateway services. Segpay serves over 50,000 online businesses across 75 countries with merchant accounts, multi-currency credit card processing gateways, and automated billing software.
The company closed 2025 with a 12% year-over-year revenue growth. Segpay has offices in London and Dublin and is a regulated payment service provider. It provides services to merchants, ensuring timely payments and transaction transparency. Many of its clients rely on reporting and prompt payouts for contractors and content creators in underbanked areas.
Segpay has partnered with Rapyd for its global payment infrastructure. Rapyd’s payment solutions assist Segpay in onboarding high-opportunity merchants and accelerating growth globally. This partnership supports both direct and indirect merchant models, enabling Segpay to meet client requirements. Rapyd also provides local payments and payouts for unbanked workforces in verticals such as eCommerce, the creator economy, and online gaming. The collaboration with Rapyd includes card acquiring, compliance, and underwriting solutions.
In July 2026, Segpay recruited Tom John as its new Chief Technology Officer. John, who co-founded InsitesData in early 2025 and served as its CTO and CIO, will now lead Segpay's technology team and operations. Marco Escobar, who previously held this remit, continues as Vice President of Operations at Segpay.
Marketing and Future Outlook
In support of its Australian expansion, Segpay is launching a print and digital advertising campaign. This campaign was developed by Creaxion, Segpay's longtime marketing agency.
