Richard Abowitz writes on www.goldplateddoor.com – The National Enquirer is reporting as breaking news what at the very least is information so old they have obtained it on VIDEO. Maybe, “videotape” is just a poor word choice and not something to be played on a VCR. Hard to say, a clear story does not seem to be the goal of the Enquirer here. Apparently, a former assistant of Roy Horn’s is suing the magician for sexual harassment, and the video helps establish this as fact. Or, maybe.
The National Enquirer does not name the accuser but does quote his attorney, Mike Meier. And, though this is apparently a civil suit (no jurisdiction is named in the online story), even this issue is confused by the National Enquirer who get a “legal expert” (again, no jurisdiction named in the online story) to add up the crimes that somehow the video documents. The expert conclusion: this behavior could lead to up to 10 years in jail for Horn. The crimes are not mentioned specifically nor is the existence of any police investigation into Horn, only the total jail time possible.
Anyone else think there is a lot missing to this story?
Horn has been partially paralyzed since being attacked by a tiger on stage at Mirage in 2003.
Update: I went to a supermarket to read the print version but did not buy National Enquirer. The incidents alleged are recent. And, a complaint has been filed with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. And, the lawsuit as yet is a mere threat. The criminal complaint only a suggestion. Clearly the jurisdiction will be here in Las Vegas if there is any court action.
Meanwhile, in the absence of any legal case, the pictures that National Enquirer show from the video feel like a violation of Roy Horn’s privacy and establish nothing more than Horn needs caregivers to go to the bathroom. Keep in mind what is going on: Any still frame from that situation can be made to look scandalous. And, even so, the pictures in National Enquirer required arrows and explanations to make clear the harassment being alleged; it was not otherwise obvious. There is still no name given for the accuser. And, right now this just feels like a smear against Horn.
