Los Angeles- Wardrobe is an ongoing expense in the sex industry. And sexual health is one of the primary concerns. Sex Workers Outreach Project – Los Angeles (SWOP-LA) has designed an event to address both needs, while having fun at the same time!
Swap & Swab 4 SWOP-LA incorporates a Swap meet of gently used erotic and fetish clothing, a free Swab for a rapid HIV test, and all day entertainment, celebrity appearance, raffles, and a silent auction with items donated from a variety of sponsors, including Eros.com. All proceeds benefit SWOP-LA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to ending violence and stigma against sex workers.
SWOP-LA sees this exciting event as a way to bring together a community that has historically been difficult to organize. “The sex industry is extremely isolating,” says Jessie Nicole, SWOP-LA’s director, “but we are building a network to share our stories, resources and experiences.”
This event will contribute to that network by creating a space for sex workers to share tools of the trade and take steps to take care of their health.
The organizers are quick to emphasize that this event is designed for anyone and everyone, and not sex workers exclusively. Jenny De Milo, a sex worker and co-organizer of the event, notes that “one thing that is unique about Swap & Swab is that it brings together sex workers of all different fields, including people who don’t identify as sex workers!”
“This event addresses wants and needs of multiple communities,” elaborates co-organizer Mistress Serene, Southern California Leather Woman 2010, “we’re reaching out to the kink community with a special section of high-end leather items and fetish-wear, as well as anyone who has an interest in sexy clothes!”
Besides a chance to increase your wardrobe, check your health, and network with colleagues and friends, all the support from Swap & Swab will go a long way in helping SWOP-LA build its network of legal and professional service providers for sex workers, develop ongoing educational seminars, networking events, and important outreach notices for the community.
This unique and fun fundraiser will take place on July 30th, from 11:00am to 6:00pm at Stockroom Studios, 2807 W. Sunset Blvd. Donations of clothing and other items have already been gathered, and Stockroom will be set up to receive more donations from July 25-29 from noon to 10:00pm.
