from www.nytimes.com- Once again, Sports Illustrated finds a way to tap into the lucrative women’s fashion market.

The magazine has taken content from its annual swimsuit issue (you know, the one where the sports weekly gallantly refrains from its regular brutish athletic coverage so that it can do women the service of showing them the latest bathing fashions) and migrated it to a calendar application for the iPhone.
As befits the sophisticated nature of this display of resort apparel, the app is restricted to purchasers who are 17 years or older.

The $2.99 iPhone app, released today (a Blackberry version is on the way), has both video and photos of the 20 models from this year’s swimsuit issue. You can assign which models go in which months, and–as an example of the obvious synergy between sports and swimsuits–choose favorite sports teams, whose schedules will then show on the calendar.
One glaring deficiency: Unlike with the printed swimsuit edition, SI has neglected to include the helpful pricing information it has always printed along with the informative photos. If the magazine is going to make a serious effort to help women find the right attire for the beach, it really should address this.
