In the political world there is a concept that all Americans know well: the concept of separation of church and state. In the adult entertainment industry there is a less well known concept known as the separation of porn and politics. In the political world, the concept of separation of church and state is designed to insure all Americans an opportunity to live their lives under the moral code they deem proper and to protect citizens from the tyranny of governance based on religious standards . In the adult entertainment world, the concept is based on the simpler, more basic “Why piss off the customers?” by bringing politics into anything! At times, these two concepts, the separation of church and state and the separation of porn and politics can coexist. Unfortunately, when the lines between church and state get blurred, the separation of porn and politics is also jeopardized. That is what we have today and that is why the adult industry has decided to take action.

Spearheaded by an organization called ACE, strip clubs around the country are actively registering voters to participate in the upcoming election which now is just months away. The idea is real simple, the church people have been voting for years and increasingly been injecting their beliefs into the laws that govern all of us. For strip clubs, this is not a good thing as the slightest touch between dancer and patron has been criminalized to the point where people can’t move in a club without violating one religious based rule or another. We want to (maybe have to change that) not only to protect ourselves but protect the community’s right to view nude dancing. For that reason, we are not only registering people to vote but strongly suggesting they cast their ballot for John Kerry as President Of The United States.

Now wait a minute Stevi, what exactly does the president have to do with strip clubs? Before you get angry (Remember I am familiar with the “Don’t piss off the customers rule”) please hear me out. Over the last 25 years or roughly since the time Jerry Falwell first said the words “Moral Majority”, the religious right has been conducting a relentless campaign to control the moral behavior of Americans. It is a campaign where every layer of government has its function. Local politicians pass laws that restrict adult behavior and the courts uphold them despite any constitutional questions or first amendment rights. The president is the one responsible for appointing these judges so while George W Bush may never say the word strip club believe me, the judges he appoints want to eradicate us, along with swinging, pornography , the internet , abortion and even the availability of contraception. The biggest task remaining is the appointment of new Supreme Court Justices which the next president certainly will have the opportunity to do. Without that court, the last desperate chance to find any of these laws which strike at the very heart of our freedom to be who we as individuals want to be, will be gone forever.
