from www.newsok.com – Oklahoma prison wardens were told Tuesday to be on alert for further inmate unrest because of a convicted felon’s arrest, an official confirmed.
Denny Edward Phillips, 32, is under police investigation because of suspicions he ordered the deaths of four people last November in Oklahoma City.
Two Tulsa police officers shot him in the abdomen Monday outside a Motel 6 during an arrest in a burglary case, police reported. He is expected to recover.
Fights involving American Indian and Hispanic inmates broke out at three prisons Nov. 21. The disturbances came one day after another man, David Allen Tyner, was charged with murder in connection to the drug-related slayings. Some inmates were hospitalized.
A deputy director at the Corrections Department informed wardens of Phillips’ arrest and told them to “pay attention,” spokesman Jerry Massie said. Wardens were together for a regular meeting.
Phillips and Tyner are American Indians. One of the victims, Casey Mark Barrientos, was Hispanic. Tyner once worked for Barrientos as a security guard.
Tyner, 28, of Locust Grove, is facing six counts of first-degree murder because two of the victims were pregnant.
Killed were Barrientos, 32, of Oklahoma City; Jennifer Lynn Ermey, 25, of Edmond; Milagros “Millie” Barrera, 22, of Mustang, and her unborn child; and Brooke Phillips, 22, of Moore, and her unborn child.
Tyner is accused in the murder charge of shooting, stabbing and setting on fire the four adults. The bodies were found when firefighters responded to a fire Nov. 9 at a rent house in southwest Oklahoma City. Tyner is being held in the Oklahoma County jail.
The case attracted national attention because Brooke Phillips was a prostitute featured on “Cathouse.” The HBO reality program is about a legal brothel, the Moonlite BunnyRanch, near Carson City, Nev.
Brothel owner Dennis Hof said he didn’t recall Brooke Phillips ever mentioning Denny Phillips.
The two are not related, authorities said.
“I don’t know the name,” Hof said. “I did have a problem with some of the people she hung out with. … She talked about people and … being around drugs and things like that, but she wasn’t a user. I kept telling her, ‘You can’t hang around people who are like that.’
“All she wanted to do was go home and have her baby and come back to work here.”
Hof said Brooke Phillips was popular at the brothel and earned “a ton of money.” He said she was skilled at pole dancing, and he recently put up a “memorial pole” in her honor.
