[onenewsnow.com]- Following a congressional recess, senators are taking up again the nomination of David Ogden — and family advocates are again issuing their warnings about the nominee.
The Senate Judiciary Committee should vote Thursday on the controversial nominee to the number-two position in the Justice Department. This latest warning related to David Ogden comes from Family Research Council senior legal fellow Cathy Ruse, who states Ogden has been in court numerous times taking extremely anti-family stances. She offers several examples.
“On the sanctity of life of the unborn child and on the interests of minors who may be pressured into abortion,” she notes. “On gays in the military and homosexual activist issues and on pornography.”
Cathy Ruse (Family Research Council)In fact, Ruse says Ogden submitted extremist arguments in defense of a man charged in a child pornography case. Ruse says the judge saw through the arguments and found the man guilty.
“If he is voted in on the position of #2 at the Department of Justice, he will be making decisions about what child pornography cases to prosecute,” Ruse warns. “He can’t be trusted in that position, given what he has done in the past.”
According to Ruse, some in the porn industry have been unable to contain themselves about the prospect of having “one of their allies” in a key position at the DOJ. One porn-industry newswire has referred to Ogden as a “strong pick,” and a porn-industry attorney in Los Angeles has stated the nomination is “a good sign for the adult industry.”
Another family advocate — this one a legal expert — is also warning about the looming confirmation of Ogden as Deputy Attorney General. Chris Klicka of the Home School Legal Defense Association has a concern on behalf of parents.
“He is of a huge concern to parents everywhere — and home schoolers, specifically — because of his position on the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child,” says the attorney. (Hear audio report)
Klicka warns that if the treaty is ratified in the U.S., children’s rights would trump parental rights.
“Under this treaty children would also have the right to go to the school of their choice,” he explains. “So if their parents wanted to home school them and they didn’t want to be home schooled, they could call a social worker on that as well and get their way. So it’s a very troublesome for the home-school community as well.”
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton supports the treaty, as does Attorney General Eric Holder. For the treaty to be ratified it has to be submitted by Clinton, something many critics believe she will do before the year is out.
In the meantime, Klicka encourages concerned citizens to contact their senators and urge them to vote against Ogden.
