California- A veteran deputy prosecutor with the state attorney general’s office was scheduled for arraignment Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of possession of child pornography.
Authorities charged David Bornstein, 54, of Cypress last month after they allegedly found thousands of photographs and videos of nude children — including toddlers — that were downloaded onto his home computer between March 2003 and March 2004.
Bornstein was placed on leave after the charges were filed last month. He has served more than 20 years in the state attorney general’s office and handled civil cases in its Los Angeles taxation division, said Orange County Deputy District Attorney Paul Chrisopoulos.
Bornstein was scheduled to be arraigned at the West Justice Center in Westminster. If convicted, he could face a year in jail and mandatory registration as a sex offender.
Authorities said they identified Bornstein in a crackdown by the Department of Homeland Security aimed at subscribers to child-pornography sites.
Bornstein allegedly subscribed to a child porn web site, paid for it with his personal credit card and downloaded photos and videos of nude children, some engaging in sex acts, Chrisopoulos said.
“He’s not a casual observer of child pornography,” Chrisopoulos said. “This is an individual who possessed thousands of images over a substantial period of time.”
Bornstein’s name appeared on the client list of RegPay, a company that serves as a financial intermediary for customers who pay online to download images from Russian and Eastern European web sites, Chrisopoulos said.
