Update: ‘Vader’ film causes porn mix-up

from www.bbc.co.uk- The director of a film starring Darth Vader actor Dave Prowse has spoken of the “misunderstanding” that occurred when police were called to the set.

Newspaper reports said that residents in Newhall in South Derbyshire had mistakenly believed an adult movie was being shot in a local property.

In fact, the film being made was an action thriller called The Kindness of Strangers by director Deborah Hadfield [pictured].

Actor Prowse was not present at the time, having already shot his scenes.

“Making this movie is a dream come true, so I was determined not to let this misunderstanding divert my attention from making a great film,” Hadfield told the BBC.

“It’s such an honour directing a screen legend like Dave Prowse and I accept that naturally the press are still very interested in everything he does.”

The director said that filming had been taking place at the property on 26 September when the police arrived.

“Two officers called, came inside, spoke to me and confirmed there was no problem. They stayed less than five minutes,” she said.

She added: “Scenes of a dramatic nature were being filmed, including two actors playing police officers.”

Asked what would have led the neighbours to think an “adult movie” was being filmed, Hadfield said: “There were a lot of crew and camera equipment coming to the property on a Saturday night which, in the middle of a residential area, may have prompted residents’ curiosity.”

The Burton-based director, whose previous films have been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, said she had made a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission over some reports of the incident.

The Kindness of Strangers is an action thriller following a man who searches across Europe for the truth of his sister’s death.

The low-budget movie began filming on 24 August on the Amalfi Coast in Italy and finished filming in early October in Staffordshire.

Filming locations included Rome, Monte Carlo, Cannes, the French Alps, Paris, Dover, Staffordshire and Derbyshire.

“The film explores the themes of truth and betrayal,” said Hadfield.

Dave Prowse – who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy – plays the hero’s father, who encourages his son to make the risky journey across Europe in search of his daughter’s killer.

“We filmed his scenes on Friday 25 September. He was not at the property when the police were called,” Hadfield said.

“I have spoken to Dave personally and he appreciated it is simply a misunderstanding.”

She added: “I was a journalist in newspapers, radio and television before becoming a full-time film-maker, so I appreciate how Chinese whispers can happen.”

The director hopes to premiere The Kindness of Strangers at the Cannes Film Festival next year.
