Virtual Sex Now a Reality?

Porn Valley- If the excitement over Internet-enabled adult gadgets at the recent Erotica Los Angeles trade show is any indication of what’s to come, virtual sex may have at last become reality.

One of the most popular demonstrations at the three-day porn industry event featured a collaboration of sorts between yet-to-be-launched dating and virtual sex hookup service High Joy and sex-toy maker Doc Johnson, the company that produces branded gadgets for popular adult film company Vivid Entertainment.

Using a two-way video, audio and text chat interface, expo attendees were invited to control Doc Johnson-branded iVibe pleasure devices being put to use by models at an undisclosed location, in various states of undress.

“The device control works both ways — the person on each end controls the speed and rhythm of the device the other is using,” explained High Joy President Amir Vatan, as one attendee cranked his remote partner’s iVibe to warp-speed intensity.

The Internet-enabled products will become publicly available before the end of 2004, and will later be integrated into an assortment of Web porn destinations.

“It’s the ultimate in site stickiness,” said Vatan. “For online adult providers, more interactivity means more traffic, and more traffic means more revenue.”

Web porn providers will announce the integration of this service to their audiences by way of a “High Joy-enabled” Web icon.

High Joy will earn revenue by selling site memberships: $20 buys you a month’s worth of multimedia chat and all the virtual sex you desire. Male users utilize a sleeve-like personal device, and the company plans to market a gadget known as the “iVibe Rabbit” to female members.

Vatan’s company also plans to sell celebrity-branded device “scripts,” something like sex-toy ring tones.

Were porn star Jenna Jameson, for instance, to engage in a two-way High Joy sex-toy session, the sequence of commands she used could be recorded and replayed by fans who purchase both the device and the corresponding digital “script.”

Device, service and scripts could be sold on a variety of online venues, including a porn star’s own site — which, in Jameson’s case, would be the highly trafficked ClubJenna.com. No confirmed deal exists for a Jameson “script,” but Vatan says his company approached the adult superstar’s management earlier this year with a proposal.

The service announcement amounts to the fulfillment of a long-held common fantasy for those in the adult industry, according to Adam Glasser, aka Seymore Butts — gonzo porn director and star of Showtime Network’s porn-themed reality TV show Family Business.

Glasser, who made headlines earlier this year for voluntarily adopting a condoms-only policy on his film sets in the wake of an HIV outbreak in the adult film community, was also present at the Los Angeles porn convention promoting his own online video-on-demand business.

“Enhanced interactivity, high-tech sex toys … obviously, it’s the future,” said Glasser. “They put men on the moon, they made an instant-erection pill, and I know that within a few years, someone’s going figure out how to simulate sex close to 100 percent accuracy, and deliver it to consumers at a reasonable price.

“And that’s a scary thing. When they do, why would any of us need to leave the house?”
