from www.blog.al.com – MOBILE, Alabama — A Wilmer man accused of sexually abusing a horse told a judge this morning that he’s receiving counseling.
Eric Easley, 27, appeared briefly in District Judge Charlie McKnight’s courtroom on charges of killing or disabling livestock and animal cruelty.
Through his attorney, Easley decided not to have a preliminary hearing, and the judge sent the cases to be considered by a grand jury. Defense attorney Bob Clark said Easley is receiving counseling for mental issues, but he declined to provide further details.
According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a miniature horse breeding facility on Wilmer Road on Oct. 30 after the owner noticed one of the horses acting strangely.
Investigators found evidence that the horse had been tied to a post by its tail and was sexually abused, sheriff’s officials have said. The facility’s owner found a wallet with Easley’s driver’s license and Social Security card nearby, officials have said.
“I am told you are receiving counseling,” McKnight said. “I’m ordering you to continue as a condition of your bond.”
Easley, who wore jeans, boots and a shiny belt buckle in court, declined to comment after the hearing. He is out of jail on $4,000 in bail.
Pat Foster, owner of the miniature horse, said the 2-year-old animal, named Ebony Ice, is still traumatized.
“I do believe he needs help,” Foster said. I’m glad that he’s getting help because I think as long as he is in therapy of some kind, then maybe nothing will happen anybody else.”
