Rae Threat, a multi-award-nominated queer Thai-American artist, photographer, filmmaker, and activist, has been recognized for her career accomplishments and contributions to the adult industry, including being named XBIZ’s Woman of the Month in October 2024. Threat currently serves as the Head of Creator Outreach at APClips and was nominated for the 2026 XBIZ Exec Award for Brand Ambassador of the Year.
Early Career and Entry into Adult
Threat began her career as a self-taught nightlife photographer during the MySpace era, documenting Los Angeles parties for promoters such as Franki Chan and Steve Aoki. Her work captured the attention of labels like Mad Decent, leading to opportunities to photograph their Blow Your Head parties and Block Party festivals, which featured artists like Skrillex, Diplo, Dillon Francis, and A-Trak. These experiences helped her develop photography skills, particularly in low-light action shots without a flash, and also honed her social and networking abilities.
Her entry into the adult industry began through connections made on MySpace. She met Eon McKai, who invited her to DVD release parties, including one for “The Doll Underground,” where she met performers and peers. When Twitter became popular, Threat posted about a Valentine’s Day shoot, and Dana DeArmond was the first to respond. This led to shoots with Jiz Lee and Courtney Trouble. A few months after meeting Courtney Trouble, Threat was invited to a porn shoot in Vegas during a trade show. She initially expected to shoot behind-the-scenes content but was given a video camera and tasked as a second camera for the production “Girl Pile,” which featured Sinn Sage, Arabelle Raphael, Nikki Hearts, and Tori Lux, and received award nominations. This marked the beginning of her career as a cameraperson in porn.
Advocacy and Artistic Approach
Threat describes shooting porn as a form of advocacy, focusing on sex worker rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and body positivity, particularly within queer porn. Her work prioritizes showcasing diverse individuals. She collaborates with inclusive directors like Inka Winter, emphasizing representation. Threat states that her motivation is not primarily marketing or financial, but rather to help consumers see themselves on screen, which can contribute to self-image and self-acceptance.
Her activism extends to exhibiting portraits of queer sex workers internationally, publishing her work as a pornographer in academic books, and speaking on panels about queer porn. She is also a community partner for Streamate’s Elevate program. Threat works with Kasey Warner and Sundayfaire, an organization founded by Warner, to organize community events, conduct outreach, and provide resources such as harm reduction supplies and sexual wellness education for sex workers.
Threat has participated in several art exhibitions designed to challenge societal narratives about sex workers and highlight underrepresented communities. She was an artist in residence at Level Ground, a nonprofit arts organization and production incubator led by queer, Black, and brown artists. There, she showcased underrepresented models on 3D LED panels and facilitated discussions with adult industry performers about experiences of typecasting and stigmatization. She also contributed to “We’re Still Working,” a group exhibit at SOMArts curated by Maxine Holloway, which featured artists like Arabelle Raphael and Jacq the Stripper, and aimed to challenge narratives about sex workers.
Her work has been featured in Duke University Press’s Transgender Studies Quarterly: Trans Pornography (Spring 2020), the season two premiere of Epix’s Sex Life docu-series, Nico Tortorella’s Space Between The Sheets, and LA Weekly as an adult industry event photographer. Threat was also featured in Playboy TV Europe’s Female Gaze, a 30-minute episode dedicated to her work and activism that aired in 2025. Additionally, she was the first to spotlight adult industry performers in Mishka’s skatewear lookbooks (Fall 2011, Spring 2012, Spring 2014) and photographed Fleshbot’s photoset featuring Jiz Lee and Stoya (2011).
Mainstream Pivot and Return to Adult
During the pandemic, Threat transitioned to mainstream production, working as a COVID compliance PA and then as a COVID testing coordinator on commercials for brands such as Apple and McDonald’s. These roles led to production coordination, including a “quit smoking” commercial featuring Snoop Dogg. However, strikes and productions relocating out of state and country significantly slowed the mainstream industry, prompting Threat to return to the adult industry. She considers herself fortunate to have had an established career in adult to which she could return.
Role at AP Clips and Future Goals
Threat became the Head of Creator Outreach for AP Clips after Gavin, whom she had known for a long time outside the industry, noticed her ability to engage with people during an XBIZ week event. Her approach to cultivating a positive creator community at AP Clips involves active listening, engagement, and advocating for creators. She will be speaking on a panel at Venus Berlin with Sana and Alex from Pornhub on the topic of “The Critical Role of Positive Relationships With Creators on Adult Platforms.”
Threat’s goals for the coming year include building a larger creator community for AP Clips, producing more community events for AP Clips and Sundayfaire, and potentially producing additional art shows. She also aims to learn how to take a break in the year following.
