If Dr. Michael Sachs has fixed your face you may be shit up the creek…
New York- An apparently healthy Irish mother of two died in part due to complications from a face-lift performed by one of New York’s most-sued doctors, an autopsy has found.
The shocking death of Kay Cregan, 42, in March after a relatively minor procedure garnered widespread attention here and in Ireland.
Cregan suffered cardiac arrest the morning after she underwent a face-lift and nose job by Dr. Michael Sachs, identified by the Daily News in 2000 as one of the state’s most-sued doctors.
Sachs’ attorney, Jay Butterman, had blamed an undiagnosed irregular heartbeat for Cregan’s death.
But the autopsy found no preexisting condition that played a role, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner.
“The surgery was a contributing factor in her death,” Borakove said.
The autopsy report did not cite any other factors, she said.
After collapsing in Sachs’ Manhattan office March 16, Cregan was taken to Roosevelt Hospital. She never regained consciousness and was taken off life support the next day, said her sister, Agnes Kelly.
Kelly, a nurse in the Boston area, said the medical examiner’s findings left “a lot of unanswered questions.
She said state health officials told her last week that their investigation of Sachs’ treatment of her sister was continuing.
State law bans the department from commenting on investigations of doctors until a potential disciplinary action is final. But a spokesman said the examination of Cregan’s care at Roosevelt Hospital found no problems.
Last year, the department, citing negligence, banned Sachs from performing complex nasal procedures without supervision.
Butterman declined to comment yesterday.
Sachs’ profile on the state’s www.nydoctorprofile.com site shows he made payments in 32 malpractice cases during the past decade.
Cregan was married with two sons, Brian, 8, and Eoghan, 6.
