It sounds a lot like porn. Last year at this time Steve Gibson, CEO of the Las Vegas-based Righthaven, known impolitely by its court room opponents as a bottom-feeding legal outfit, was riding high on the hog.

Gibson, the tough-talking, voluble partner in the law firm of Dickinson Wright in Las Vegas, started up Righthaven LLC with the idea of litigating website owners for copyright infringement.

Righthaven got its seed money by entering into agreements with news organizations like Stephens Media, publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Stephens Media paid Righthaven $500,000 and, in exchange for partnership, Righthaven filed lawsuits against bloggers who reproduced Review-Journal articles without permission.

Fueled by money from other entities such as Media News Group, publishers of The San Jose Mercury News, Righthaven went on a tear and filed over 275 such copyright suits.
