Perhaps not what you’d call a spooky house movie in the true sense, Arsenic and Old Lace, a genuine piece of Americana, is classic Frank Capra screwball comedy.
It’s about a pair of Brooklyn spinsters who poison “lonely” gentlemen callers and bury the bodies in their basement. The story is billed as a “Halloween Tale” though I’ll never figure the scene from a Brooklyn Dodgers’ game, apparently taking place on the same day and setting the stage. Baseball at the end of October? No way.
That puzzling anachronism aside, Arsenic and Old Lace also showcases the marvelous comedy talents of the versatile Cary Grant. Which should have been Bob Hope, if not for contractual issues with Paramount.
