Ashley Blue’s Book Selling for $200, Limited Edition, With Pubic Hair

At www.adultcybermart.com we give pube hairs away free.

from www.forbes.com – A new limited-edition book by an adult film star aims to sell copies by offering buyers something they won’t find elsewhere.

Girlvert: A Porno Memoir is priced at a whopping $200 and limited to a mere 50.

So, what’s the twist?

Each book jacket contains one of the starlet’s pubic hairs.

In recent years, the book publishing industry has floundered. Self-publishing has given authors the means to sell their own work, and self-publishing millionaires like Amanda Hocking are who a new generation of authors aspire to be.

At the same time, the internet has made it easier for consumers to engage with artists directly, and savvy creators have learned that hardcore fans will pay for customized product. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, Seth Godin and Cory Doctorow are examples of those who are exploring this avenue and cutting the book publishing business out of the equation.

Now, porn star Oriana Small, whose stage name is Ashley Blue, and her publisher are exploring what the literary-minded and sexually curious will pay for when it comes to art books.

Girlvert is Small’s autobiography of her decade-long career in the porn trade. Small, as Blue, is a widely-known performer. She is famous for her extreme sexual performances and for starring in an adult video series entitled “Girlvert.” The book is her story of what happened on stage and off, from her personal struggles to performing for the cameras to finding love.

Blue joins a new literary niche: porn star authors. Porn star-turned-”Entourage” guest star Sasha Grey, who scored the lead role in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience,” recently released Neu Sex, a book of erotic photos. Jenna Jameson’s How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale, co-written with Neil Strauss, spent several weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and continues to sell.

And Girlvert has scored a nod from another controversial author, James Frey.

“Oriana Small has pushed herself to the outermost extremes of what the body and mind are capable of — all before turning thirty years old — and now she’s made it an authentic read for the rest of us to marvel at, elevating the depravity and denial inherent in the pornographic arts to a singular literary experience,” Frey’s blurb for the book reads.

The book, which is released this month, is available as a standard paperback or in the limited edition. The limited edition has a letterpress cover, is signed and dated by Small, and includes a Polaroid of Small by her photographer husband Dave Naz, a lithograph of an artwork by Small herself, and an invitation to a launch event on Small’s book tour.

But the most provocative aspect of the limited edition is the pubic hair embedded in the book’s jacket.

“Jacketed in handmade Japanese paper by designer Ted Nava, including one bulbous Oriana Small pubic hair plucked by Small herself and inserted into each sheet of dust jacket paper as it dries,” the product description reads. While some authors claim to put themselves into their work, Small has done so literally.

To find out if the gimmick is working, I emailed Tyson Cornell, Small’s publisher.

The two conceived of the project several years ago, when Cornell read Small’s manuscript. Impressed by her rendering of her porn tale, Cornell introduced Small to several editors and literary agents in New York. They all passed on the project.

“It was just too explicit for anyone to actually do anything with it while still attempting to maintain any kind of integrity,” Cornell explained.

After finding success publishing another bespoke book — a novel with a companion soundtrack — Cornell returned to Small and suggested they publish her book under his A Barnacle Book imprint.

At the time the two began working on the idea, Max Hardcore, a notorious pornographer whose real name is Paul Little, was incarcerated after having been found guilty on various obscenity-related charges. Small, who had worked with Hardcore, suggested they create a “Pubes for Prisoners” campaign to promote the book.

According to Cornell, “This ultimately led us to the idea of creating a limited art edition of Girlvert that includes a genuine Oriana Small pubic hair placed in this handmade Japanese paper that we’ve assembled as a unique dust jacket for this exclusive edition of only 50 copies.”

So far, the paperback edition has 2,100 pre-orders, and the $200-a-p0p limited edition is nearly sold out. By independent publishing standards, the book is a success.

“Is this what it takes to sell a book this days?” I asked Cornell.

“No. I don’t think you need to have pube paper and wild porn stories to sell a book these days,” he replied. “But it can help. 🙂 ”
