Georgia- from www.ajc.com – Tucker man’s collection of legal pornography helped prosecutors secure back-to-back life sentences against him Friday in two rapes he was accused of committing in 2008.
Tyrone Womack, 38, sexually assaulted two women in separate incidents in January and June of 2008. In each case, the attacks happened after Womack offered to give the victims a ride home. He drove one of the women back to his house, which he nicknamed “the dungeon,” prior to attacking her, said Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter.
Womack drove the other victim to the rear of a bakery to assault her inside the vehicle.
Both the victims testified at trial and identified Womack as their attacker. However, the evidence that police found inside Womack’s home was equally damning.
A large collection of legal pornography depicted simulated rape and bondage acts. Prosecutors showed clips from two films to jurors to bolster their argument that Womack was copying the behavior he watched in the pornography. They also introduced into evidence 773 similar video clips.
“It’s one of the few times we’ve done it in this office, but the similarities between the porn and the acts was so striking,” Porter said. “There was so much of it that it was significant to the case.”
Defense attorney Matt Crosby had objected to the videos being shown at trial, claiming they were too prejudicial to the jury. He said they were legally obtained from legitimate commercial websites.
“I don’t know at the end of the day if that’s what drove them to their verdict, but it certainly was powerful evidence,” Crosby said.
Crosby had argued that the victims were prostitutes and that the acts were consensual.
