TAMPA— from www.nbc4i.com – The stripper mobile isn’t so mobile these days.
The vehicle was no doubt the most erotic moving billboard in town – a truck with picture-window-sized Plexiglas sides with gyrating dancers from a local strip club inside – and for the past several weekends had been plying the streets of Tampa’s entertainment districts.
But for now, the stripper mobile sits on the curb in the Déjà Vu Showgirls club parking lot on Adamo Drive, idled over a dispute with police about the vehicle’s registration.
The traveling strip show is owned by the Déjà Vu Showgirls club, but Tampa police told club representatives Friday that the vehicle is not properly registered in Nevada, though the license plate shows a current registration, said Luke Lirot, the attorney representing the club.
Until that issue is resolved, the stripper mobile will stay parked at the club. Lirot did not know how long it would take to iron out the problem.
The club also agreed during the meeting with police to tone down some dance moves better left for inside the club, Lirot said.
Also, the dancers will don outfits that expose a bit less skin than what the thong bikinis they had been wearing revealed.
Not that the dancers or their attire were violating any laws, the attorney said.
“Nothing about the performances was illegal,“ Lirot said.
The long and winding journey of the stripper mobile began in Las Vegas just before Halloween last year, when it made routine laps up and down the strip, drumming up business for the Déjà Vu nude club in Sin City.
But Clark County lawmakers began grumbling about it, said Larry Beard, marketing manager for the Déjà Vu Showgirls in Las Vegas.
“The county commissioners started to complain about it,“ he said. “We weren’t breaking any laws, but we have to deal with county commissioners with building permits and liquor licenses, so we decided to take it off the road.“
That’s when Beard got the idea to put the show on the road—heading east, destination: New Orleans—where the high-flying New Orleans Saints were hosting playoff games at the Superdome.
“The Saints kept winning, so we decided to take [the stripper mobile] to Miami for the Super Bowl,“ Beard said.
On the way, the bus stopped in Tampa for a little thing called Gasparilla weekend.
Now, it’s back in Tampa but not permanently, Beard said.
Beard said the stripper mobile will visit some 100 Déjà Vu clubs in more than a dozen states before it heads back to home base in Vegas by May.
Besides luring customers into the clubs, the stripper mobile builds the Déjà Vu brand, he said.
“Plus,“ he said, “it builds morale at the clubs.“
The vehicle only goes out at night and only hits the party districts of cities—the more adult-oriented parts of town, he said. “But, it could show up at bike festival or car show, too,“ he said. “It’s built for that.“
Eric “Ice” Terrell, general manager of the Déjà Vu in Tampa, said business at the club has increased over the few weekends the vehicle motored around Tampa.
“Definitely,“ he said. “We get calls all the time from people who want to know if we are the club with the stripper mobile.“
