Disruptive Films is set to release the first scene of its new mystery drama feature, “Honeyguide,” on Friday, August 9th. The film, described as similar to the streaming hit “Saltburn,” will debut with a scene titled “Manipulation > Masturbation.”

“Honeyguide” draws inspiration from the indie film “Saltburn.” Siouxsie Q and Michael Vegas, who were recognized as Director of the Year — Gay Movies at the 2024 XBIZ Awards, co-directed “Honeyguide” alongside Gamma Entertainment Creative Director Jessica Jasmin. Their previous work, “For You, I Will,” which received the Gay Feature of the Year award, took inspiration from the Netflix series “For You.”

Siouxsie Q noted that she had not watched “Saltburn” when she began working on the “Honeyguide” script. The film originally had a different title and did not include references to brood parasitism. Q stated that she was "truly struck by the animalistic nature of each character in this story" and drew parallels between the characters' actions and "the brutality of so many aspects of the natural world." This observation led to the film's namesake, the honeyguide bird, which lays its eggs in the nests of other species, with its young consuming the host species' chicks upon hatching.

Q observed that "Nature is absolutely horrific," and that this includes "human nature," a notion she stated is at the core of the movie. She also mentioned that, similar to “Saltburn,” she wanted the film’s title to be "simple, evocative and punchy," and to sound like "a euphemism for something erotic." She emphasized that “Honeyguide” is ultimately its own unique story.

Writer Taylor Saracen expressed a desire to "really pump up the scenes that had everyone talking in ‘Saltburn’ and make them even more shocking."

Cast Experiences

Kam Stone, who plays Brooks Dunham, described his experience shooting “Honeyguide” as different from his previous work. Stone stated, "The experience with the crew, really getting to know you and helping you understand the role you’re there to fulfill, brought us all closer together by the end of it."
