PHOENIX – from www.kvoa.com – A Casa Grande farmer and his wife were sentenced in federal court today for allegedly spending part of a $300,000 Department of Agriculture loan on expenses including $25,000 on a new BMW, and $5,000 at strip clubs.
On April 16, Carlos Carley Carranza [pictured], Jr., 52, and his wife, 31-year-old Laura Brooke Murrill, of Gilbert, were sentenced by a U.S. District Court Judge for Theft of Government Property.
On February 19, 2010, Carranza applied to the Department of Agriculture for a farm operating loan, according to court documents. The loan was approved in the amount of $300,000, and was to be used solely for farm operating expenses.
The first installment of $120,000 was deposited into Carranza’s bank account, and within a week, he and his wife had spend $85,000 of it on personal items, including a $25,000 BMW.
“Carranza also gave $20,000 to a friend and spent approximately $5,000 at strip clubs during that one week period,” states a release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Carranza was sentenced to 21 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Murrill was sentenced to three years of supervised probation. Both had pleaded guilty to the charge.
