Canada- from www.toromagazine.com – This past weekend Good For Her (a Toronto-based sex shop) held the 6th annual Feminist Porn Awards.
Despite what you may think, the Feminist Porn Awards are not about man-hating, hairy-pitted lesbian lovers (though, let’s be clear, some people do like it hairy). In order to be nominated a film must: a) involve a woman in the production through writing, direction, etc., b) depict genuine female pleasure, or c) expand the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenge stereotypes that are often found in mainstream porn.
And about the man hating – do the awards discriminate against penis possessors?
“Good gravy, no,” says the Good For Her website.
With categories such as Most Deliciously Diverse Cast and Smutty Schoolteacher Award for Sex Education (the winners this year were Tight Places: A Drop of Color and Oral Sex For Couples Volumes 1-3 respectively) you can begin to see what this particular awards gala is all about.
If you’re going to get someone’s opinion on porn there are few better to turn to than Alison Lee, the organizer of the Feminist Porn Awards and manager of Good For Her. In addition to Lee’s formal education in sex and gender studies she has had many jobs working in the industry, including porn site reviewing.
“I’ve seen well over 1,000 porn sites,” says Lee matter-of-factly, “and the main offense of most of them is that they’re boring.”
She goes on to explain that traditional porn, or what most of us call to mind when we think of porn, appeals to a very specific audience. The Good For Her website explains the reason for starting the awards was to step up and make a difference, that it’s not enough to just criticize the adult film industry. Actions moan louder than words.
“Stereotypical porn doesn’t necessarily appeal to a lot of people, even the straight men it’s made for,” explains Lee.
“A large reason [The Feminist Porn Awards] was started was because of sexism and racism in porn,” she adds.
Lee alludes to the fact that it might be nice to not need the Feminist Porn Awards, though she would never want to see them go. There are several directors and producers featured at the awards who are beginning to break into the mainstream adult film industry and are taking their sex-positive message with them. With production cost plummeting due to technological advancements (you and your web cam could be the next big thing dear reader) more people are able to expose their talents.
“It is possible that the mainstream porn industry will start recognizing more of the talents of these producers,” Lee says, “BUT even if that happened I think it’s important to have feminist, community based events like this to celebrate different ways of making porn and creative depictions of sexuality.”
