Next Door Films is set to debut its new feature, "That Summer," on Saturday, January 21, on Next Door Studios. The film stars Next Door exclusive performers Carter Woods and Ryder Owens in a story described as cinematic, focusing on self-discovery and romance.

"That Summer" Production Details

The upcoming release marks the sixth feature from Next Door Films' story-driven line. Jeremy Babcock, executive producer and CCO for Next Door, stated that "That Summer" has been his project "from day one." Babcock indicated that the film was inspired by a country song of the same name and is his way of "having some gay fun with my Montana roots." He also mentioned the intent to "make some eye candy and explore what happens behind closed doors out in the country," specifically referencing Ryder and Carter's "demand to feel the rumbling and chase the lightning from the sky."

Dalton King, the writer for "That Summer," expressed his enjoyment in working closely with Babcock on the project. King noted that he had "never written something like this in my life" and felt fortunate to develop an idea that Babcock "had been wishing to provide for a while." King also praised the performances of Carter Woods and Ryder Owens in the film.

Ryder Owens shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with Carter Woods, describing Woods as "so hot and fun that when we were making the scenes, I didn't want to stop recording." Woods echoed this sentiment, adding that it was "great to fit into a role that felt a little closer to home."

Connections to "Breaking Frontiers"

Next Door Films previously announced a four-part feature titled "Breaking Frontiers," which is written and directed by Jeremy Babcock. This feature continues the story of Carter Woods' cowboy character from "That Summer." In "Breaking Frontiers," Carter's character focuses on his new ranch hand, Cody Seiya. Andrew Miller, Carter's horse caretaker, provides encouragement for Carter to "let his guard down and embrace Cody's advances." The narrative explores "love in the country air" and the implications when Carter's high school friends visit.

Babcock explained that "Breaking Frontiers" had been a goal of his since the release of "That Summer." He noted that the initial cowboy love story received a positive response, and he had been awaiting the right opportunity to continue the narrative. Babcock described the four-part feature as the "big Feature of the Summer," which provided an opportunity to "do it right," introduce new characters, and "dig deep into creating this sexy country world."

Carter Woods commented on playing the cowboy character, stating it is "one of my favorites to play." He identified the accent as the most challenging aspect, describing it as "not my cup of tea" but "still hilarious to try." Woods also spoke about working with Cody Seiya, stating he "definitely lived up to the hype" and is "a great person and scene partner." Woods expressed anticipation for future collaborations with Seiya.

Cody Seiya reciprocated the praise for Woods, describing their scene as "so intimate." Seiya credited Woods' "acting ability and kindness as a sex partner" for making him comfortable. Seiya also mentioned being named after Wild Bill Cody, which he felt was "a fun way of delving into my namesake."

"The Door into Summer"

The title "The Door into Summer" is also associated with a 2021 Japanese science fiction film directed by Takahiro Miki. This film, based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1957 novel of the same name, was released on June 25, 2021. The screenplay was written by Tomoe Kanno. The film stars Kento Yamazaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Naohito Fujiki, Natsuna, and Hidekazu Mashima. It has a running time of 118 minutes and was distributed by Toho and Aniplex. The plot involves a robotics engineer and inventor, Soichiro Takakura, who loses his company, Future Works Enterprises (FWE), to his business partner Kazuhito Matsushita and company secretary Rin Shiraishi in 1995. Rin Shiraishi was Soichiro's fiancée and manipulated him to gain control of the company. Soichiro's remaining friends are Riko Matsushita, the daughter of his late guardian, and his cat Pete. Soichiro opts for "cold sleep" (suspended animation) at Credeus, hoping to wake up thirty years later. He wakes up in the year 2025.
