Forbes: Crowdfunding Porno-Style

from www.forbes.com – Hope springs for erotic enthusiasts, burgeoning pornographic entrepreneurs and enterprising fetishists. A site dedicated to rating and funding erotic/pornographic projects – books, movies, games, etc. – has begun accepting concepts that could be then funded through user support. Offbeatr.com is stepping up to the crowdfunding plate as the Kickstarter of porn.

According to Offbeatr, registered users of the site can pitch their ideas for adult projects. Those proposals are then either supported through votes by other site users or not.

Once the “vote goal” has been reached, those projects can start raising money. Those who submit proposals can promise products or rewards to entice support. Those rewards or products must be delivered if the funding goal for the project is met. User verification requires that project proposers submit an address, tax id info and a phone number.

Sounds simple enough, but is it so simple that heavy hitters in the porn industry might see a tsunami of competition coming their way from beginner pornographers armed with crowd-funding and a sexy dream?

User generated content in the adult entertainment industry has come to be known by some as Porn 2.0, an evolution of Porn 1.0, represented by simple online photos and film clips accompanied by advertising. Might the next branch in this sultry business evolution come from small companies funded by other porn enthusiasts?

If so, what will it look like? Will it take the form of highly advanced sensory technology, surround sound audio or greater use of face-to-face video technology (though the latter possibility is not exactly state of the art)?

Since Offbeatr openly declares that project proposals can come in many forms, it stands to reason that the site – if it gains traction – will be a boon to not only pornographers but artists using erotica in their mediums and even small consumer product manufacturers, such as those who make toys, books and software.

At the moment, Offbeatr.com is currently polling several projects, including:

Double D Erotica: a minority, female-owned company that markets to the urban, black lesbian community, seeking to offer such products as an adult erotic social networking/ blogging site and streaming videos.

The Importance of Being Open: A series of short films following a couple as they meet, get to know each other, eventually have sex and deal with their relationship. The films seem intended to be a combination of the explicit visuals of pornography and the drama of the relationships between characters in a film or TV series.

Sex Twin: This proposal for an online pornographic search engine will allow users to upload a photo of a person and then see which adult entertainment figures resemble that person, such as actors/actresses, phone sex operators or cam models. This project boasts an eventual smart phone or tablet app.
