ST. LOUIS, MO from www.fox2now.com – Bristol Palin will not be speaking at Washington University after all. She was asked to speak about abstinence, but now, that won’t happen.
The Student Health Advisory Committee says they believe the controversy over her appearance would overshadow the topics they hope to discuss.
The committee released a statement early Friday morning saying it was a mutual agreement between the group and Palin not to proceed with the speaking contract.
There were several issues surrounding her proposed visit, including the price tag.
Her topic of abstinence, in light of being a single mom who got pregnant at 17 was also generating plenty of controversy.
Wash U has long reportedly invited controversial speakers and this dis-invitation will more than likely get people talking again. Replacing Bristol will be Dr. Katie Plax. She is physician at Wash U’s School of Medicine and also a director of a student health center.
She will be joined on the panel by representatives from Planned Parenthood, the Catholic Student Union and the student health services.
The student we spoke with on Monday, mostly said they’re not opposed to her speaking, They’re opposed to the amount of money being spent, especially in light of cuts on campus programs, and the rising cost of fees at the University.
According to the Student Life Newspaper at Wash U, “the University drew heat.. when it refused to allow Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to speak on campus.” The University hosted the only vice presidential debate in October of 2009 “made the decision in an effort to avoid appearing to favor any particular candidates in the presidential race” according to the paper.
