from www.dailycomet.com – A South Lafourche High School teacher is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old male student she taught last year.
Heather Lasseigne Chiasson, 29, is charged with a misdemeanor crime and remains suspended from her job.
Chiasson, 112 E. 28th Place, Larose, is charged with prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student, which is a misdemeanor in Louisiana, said Brennan Matherne, a spokesman for the Lafourche Sheriff’s Office. The alleged offense does not rise to the level of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, a more-severe charge, because the student was 17 at the time.
The school discovered the alleged relationship Friday, said Floyd Benoit, a spokesman for the school system.
Detectives contacted the student that day. The teen said the relationship began with flirting and resulted in sexual activity, including intercourse, Matherne said.
Chiasson is an English teacher and has not taught the student since last school year. Police did not release the student’s name.
Detectives said the student backed up his story by showing police sexually explicit text messages from Chiasson.
Chiasson refused to speak to police about the matter, Matherne said.
Attempts to contact Chiasson, who is not listed, were not successful.
Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews said Chiasson has been suspended from her position, and the school system will decide her final employment status after an investigation into the allegations is complete.
The school system’s personnel department and South Lafourche High administrators are conducting the investigation, Matthews said.
For a first offense, the teacher can be fined up to $1,000, or go to jail for up to six months, or both, Matherne said.
Neither Benoit nor Matherne could say Monday evening how the alleged relationship was discovered, but Benoit said anyone with information about a teacher’s misconduct can report it to any school employee, who is then required by law to tell police.
Benoit said staff and students are encouraged to report suspected misconduct or crimes to school administrators. The school system’s website, www.lafourche.k12.la.us, also has a “Feedback” tab where people can submit information. The messages can be anonymous if the sender chooses, he said.
Chiasson’s suspension was one of two within the Lafourche public schools last week. Curtis Boudreaux, 68, of Cut Off is charged with cruelty to a juvenile after police said he was caught on video shaking an 8-year-old.
Boudreaux, who was a guidance counselor at Golden Meadow Lower Elementary School, has also been suspended pending an investigation.
