from www.pjstar.com – A Manual Academy art teacher faces at least 10 years in federal prison for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old student.
Amanda Ludwig, 28, appeared in U.S. District Court in Peoria on Monday, charged with one count of enticement of a minor. Senior U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm ordered her held in custody of the U.S. marshals pending a bond hearing next week.
The slight woman with blonde hair said very little during the five-minute hearing. She sat and mostly stared straight ahead. When the hearing was over and she turned to her family, she was on the verge of tears. One woman said “remember we love you” as they led Ludwig off in handcuffs.
Ludwig wasn’t the boy’s teacher but was helping him with school work, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday. The two had met last year when Ludwig was his art teacher. Ludwig has been a teacher at Manual since August 2009. The complaint states the two were communicating through text messages for several weeks and that those conversations turned sexual in nature.
The charges were filed in federal court because the text messages involve the Internet and interstate commerce, which makes the offense a federal crime. The penalties also are far stiffer. She could face up to 40 years in prison, but that’s highly unlikely.
Ludwig, the complaint states, sent nude and partially nude photographs of herself to the teen. Sometime between Jan. 28 and Jan. 31, the two had sex in a classroom at Manual, the complaint states.
School officials learned about the matter when another student told district police officers that the 15-year-old boy had bragged about having sex with Ludwig and showed a video on his cellphone.
When questioned, Ludwig allegedly admitted to “sexting” the boy and then having sex with him.
Chris Coplan, a District 150 spokesman, said Ludwig was on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal district investigation.
If the allegations are true, she would be the second Manual teacher within five years to face such charges.
In 2008, Jodi Church, 32, was convicted in both state and federal court of enticing two 16-year-old students to engage in sex. She was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for enticement and to a concurrent 4½-year sentence for having oral sex with one of the boys. The other teen refused her advances.
Church is slated to be released from federal custody in April, according to federal prison records.
