from www.ksfy.com – One of South Dakota’s lawmakers is taking punches from the Mixed Martial Arts community after his blog post proposing a MMA ban in the state.
Representative Steve Hickey, of Sioux Falls, posted on his blog that South Dakota should ban MMA. Hickey has caused an online stir after calling MMA Cage Fighting the “child porn of sports.”
In his argument, Hickey discussed similarities between the desensitization to violence with desensitization to pornography. Hickey posted in his blog:
“The psychological community will tell you that desensitization to violence works exactly like desensitization to porn. You know how porn progresses… a peek at topless isn’t enough, it all has to come off, then a pic is not enough… it goes to video then to virtual and then to the devaluation and mistreatment of women, human trafficking and sex crimes against women. Violence works the same way. Boxing wasn’t enough so they allowed kicking, kneeing people in the head, then elbows to the face, then they put a cage around it. The point is to knock the other guy unconscious while pay per view crowds cheer it on. Why not nunchucks?”
South Dakota lawmakers are debating a bill that would create the South Dakota Athletic Commission to provide for the supervision of boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts competitions and sparring exhibitions in the state. On Monday, South Dakota’s House Commerce and Energy committee unanimously sent the bill the House floor.
Governor Dennis Daugaard opposes the measure because it would legitimize mixed martial arts fights, which he says are so violent they don’t deserve to be called sport.
