Imperial Beach cracks down on adult business

IMPERIAL BEACH, California — from www.signonsandiego.com – The only adult entertainment establishment in Imperial Beach will have to comply with new guidelines.

The City Council recently approved an ordinance imposing stricter regulations on the Romantix Book Store on Palm Avenue.

New guidelines include video surveillance, a smaller area inside the viewing rooms and better lighting.

“The owner was pretty cooperative,” said code compliance officer David Garcias. “The company also has businesses in San Diego, so they are familiar with the regulations we were trying to implement.”

The issue was brought to the council’s attention after the city received a complaint from a resident in January 2009 that prostitution and other sexual activities were taking place in the store. The Sheriff’s Department was asked to investigate.

No arrests or citations were issued, but officers noticed that doors leading to the viewing booths were locked from the inside. That and other factors prompted the city to act.

Garcias said rules typical for adult entertainment stores operating in other cities were not covered by the Imperial Beach Municipal Code.

An assistant manager at the store declined to comment.
