I think it’s safe to say that layoff’s on that scale at AVN are not that
uncommon. I survived two dramatic layoffs at the company, and several
minor ones.
Gene, if you could shed some light on something, I’d appreciate it. As
archivist at AVN, I remember a number of articles from around 1992
describing the peril the adult industry and AVN was in due to the
economy. What AVN and the industry are experiencing doesn’t seem to be
entirely new, only on a larger scale. Can you confirm this?
Meanwhile, back to AVN, about 2004, we had a major round of layoffs at
AVN. Thankfully, some of these folks came back within the year and some
have been among AVN’s best workers.
As for the state of the industry and AVN, I must disagree with Paul Fishbein on one point. The adult industry is not recession proof. We are feeling the effects of a hideously bad economy, not only directly on the sales, but from the people flooding into the sex industry looking for money. Getting naked and fucking just isn’t new anymore. In order to survive, and win, you will have to be outstanding in your field, and completely novel in approaching your customers.
Best wishes all round.
Sincerely,
Jay
