NY- The junkie actor charged in the murder of an off-duty cop is spending his time in jail planning a showbiz comeback with a movie about his life.
“I should be out, home, with my laptop, writing,” Lillo Brancato told New York magazine from Rikers Island. “I think I’m a pretty good writer.
“In a way, I’m glad I went through this stuff,” he added. “Because I can capture it on film and would know how to do it.”
Brancato’s plans outraged the slain cop’s family, who vowed to stop him from cashing in on his notoriety.
The faded star of “A Bronx Tale,” Brancato even boasted that he’s as talented as his mentor, Robert De Niro, who directed his film debut. “I think one day, I could be one of the best filmmakers,” he said.
Brancato, 29, and his ex-girlfriend’s father, Steven Armento, are accused in the Dec. 10 shooting death of Officer Daniel Enchautegui, who caught the pair breaking into a Bronx apartment. The actor, who also had a role in “The Sopranos,” did not want to talk about the slaying, except to whine about how it has ruined him.
“I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Brancato. “It kills me every day, being in here, knowing that I am innocent. I’m not a person who should be here. I am a good person.”
Brancato was not armed during the break-in when Armento allegedly fired a fatal bullet into Enchautegui’s heart with a .357 pistol. Both suspects, heroin users who were trying to steal prescription drugs from an apartment when they encountered Enchautegui, were wounded in the shootout.
Behind bars, Brancato has been working on his physique, thinking about a new hairstyle, and reminiscing about drug-fueled romps with strippers at Scores and one-night stands at Yonkers motels.
Enchautegui’s father, Pedro, said Brancato has only ever thought about himself – and he told the Daily News the Hollywood has-been is crazy if he thinks he can profit from the tragedy.
“We’ll stop him from making a movie,” he said. “I’ll speak to my lawyer.”
