Sherman Oaks- A Hungarian immigrant, who authorities allege ran a Sherman Oaks brothel that employed her fellow Hungarians as prostitutes, pleaded not guilty Monday to perjury and visa fraud charges.
Angela Csutai, 33, of Van Nuys, appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom for arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Victor Kenton, who set an Aug. 26 trial date.
The perjury charge carries a penalty of up to five years in federal prison, while the visa fraud charge carries a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years behind bars.
Csutai, who was arrested June 17 and indicted last week, is suspected of entering into a sham marriage with a U.S. citizen to get a green card.
In her application, Csutai stated that she was a housewife when she was actually running a brothel, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice alleged last week. Csutai is also accused of lying under oath to a federal immigration officer by stating that she was living with her spouse when she wasn’t, Kice said.
Csutai was indicted along with a Reseda-based adult filmmaker and another Hungarian woman whom authorities allege also entered into a sham marriage.
David Allen Crawford, 37, and Agnes Jeges, 35 were arrested at their homes last week.
The duo’s alleged violations came to light in an investigation into a scheme involving Hungarian women hired to work as prostitutes at the Sherman Oaks brothel, authorities said.
Crawford, a U.S. citizen known in the adult film industry as David Lord, is charged with perjury for allegedly lying on an immigration application for Jeges, who is charged with making false statements.
Jeges allegedly worked as a prostitute for Csutai, who ran the business out of a Sherman Oaks apartment from 2004 to 2006, authorities allege.
