Michael "Mr. Magic" Barney, the founder of Atlanta's Magic City, was inducted into Exotic Dancer Magazine’s Hall of Fame on Tuesday, August 24th, 2025. The induction took place during the ED Honors Award Show at the annual Exotic Dancer (ED) Expo in Las Vegas.

Barney's Induction and Industry Recognition

The ED Honors Award Show, established in 1998, is described as the only national awards show for the adult nightclub industry. Kristofer Kay, Managing Editor of EXOTIC DANCER Magazine, stated that few luminaries in the industry have ascended to the heights of Mr. Magic. Kay noted Barney's influence on Southern hip-hop, stating that the words "Magic City" resonate beyond Atlanta and have become embedded in the American zeitgeist.

Magic City, a strip club in Atlanta, Georgia, was founded in 1985 by Michael "Magic" Barney. The club is currently owned by Michael "Magic" Barney. In October 1985, Michael "Mr. Magic" Barney founded Magic City in Atlanta with a focus on creating a premium strip club experience characterized by outstanding customer service and skilled dancers. The club rose to fame when Atlanta Hawks players, such as Dominique Wilkins, started visiting with their friends. Magic City has since become an iconic part of Atlanta, acknowledged for its significant influence on hip-hop, fashion, and Southern culture.

Magic City's Cultural Impact

When Magic City opened its doors in 1985, it was described as the birth of a movement. Barney's vision transformed Magic City into a cultural institution, helping to redefine Atlanta as a capital of black creativity, nightlife, and music. "Magic City Mondays," which began as a word-of-mouth phenomenon, evolved into a rite of passage for emerging hip-hop artists. GQ Magazine once wrote that Mondays at Magic City became "the most important night in the most important club in the most important city in hip-hop."

Magic City has well-documented ties with the trap and hip-hop scene. The club has been associated with the early careers of Future and Migos. DJ Esco worked at Magic City. DC the Brain Supreme of Tag Team was working at Magic City when he released the hit "Whoomp! (There It Is)."

Several rap and hip-hop songs mention Magic City, including "Strip Club" by The 2 Live Crew, "Magic City Monday" by Jeezy, and "Magic" by Future. The reference to "Monday" is because Magic City is "supposedly the Holy Grail of Atlanta strip clubs on Monday nights." In July 2015, GQ released a documentary titled "Magic City" about the strip club, directed by Lauren Greenfield. Notable visitors to Magic City have included 2Pac, Biggie, and Michael Jordan. In November 2018, Magic City was temporarily refashioned as "Future City" to celebrate Future.
