Michigan- Suspended University of Michigan defensive lineman Larry Harrison Jr. was ordered to stand trial Wednesday on four felony counts of indecent exposure at houses occupied by women students near campus last year, despite objections by his attorney that the women had identified the wrong man.

Attorney Anthony Chambers argued during Harrison’s preliminary examination in Washtenaw County Circuit Court that two of the three women acknowledged having identified other men as suspects in multiple photo lineups before Harrison’s arrest in December. The third woman testified that Harrison, 21, of Detroit was one of three men she picked from a single photo lineup who could have been masturbating on her porch on Dec. 6.

“You can’t say 100 percent this is the face you saw?” Chambers asked Erin Sorensen, 21, a U-M junior who had picked Harrison from the photo lineup.

“He was one of three that I picked,” Sorenson replied. “It was based on body type, haircut and features. I had seen that he was a suspect and had already seen his picture” in news reports.

Ann Arbor Police Officer Craig Lee, who was part of a surveillance crew following Harrison, testified that officers saw Harrison’s car cruising the neighborhood near Sorensen’s home shortly after the incident. Lee said he followed Harrison’s car to a house in the 700 block of South Division Street and watched him pull down his pants and masturbate at the side of the house and on the sidewalk.

Lee radioed to other officers working the detail, who helped arrest Harrison. When confronted, Harrison told police that he had lost his wallet and his was looking for his identification, Lee testified.

Harrison was suspended from the U-M football team after his arrest. He is still enrolled as a student.

Under questioning by Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecutor Blaine Longsworth, Katie Karlson, 21, a U-M senior, said she identified Harrison in a photo lineup as the man she saw masturbating at the end of her driveway on Michigan Avenue on Aug. 28.

But Karlson admitted under questioning by Chambers that she also identified a 55-year-old man as a possible suspect in the photo lineup in September. Later, she testified that she was more confident Harrison was the suspect when she picked him out of another photo lineup in December.

“It struck a chord with me,” Karlson said.

Corinn Cunningham, 22, who recently graduated from the U-M, admitted she had picked out photos of three male suspects, including Harrison, in three lineups. Chambers tried to show that Cunningham was influenced by news reports that Harrison was a football player and had been arrested as a suspect before she saw his picture in a lineup. Cunningham acknowledged having seen some news reports but said she was 85 percent sure of her identification of Harrison.

Longsworth told Washtenaw County Judge John Collins that the facts considered together provided evidence of Harrison’s guilt: that Lee had seen Harrison masturbate outside a house occupied by women, that all the houses where the incidents occurred were occupied by women and located near campus and that the victims gave similar descriptions of the suspect.

In ordering Harrison to stand trial, Collins expressed concerns about the victims’ identifications, but he noted that all the evidence is not presented at a preliminary examination. Harrison faces from one day to life in prison if convicted of multiple felonies as a sexually delinquent person.
