Chicago – from www.chicagotribune.com – A Neuqua Valley High School teacher’s aide is accused of having a five-month sexual relationship with a student she tutored, police said Friday.
Police said in a press release that Deborah J. Cox, 58, of Naperville, was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse after a six-month police investigation.
Naperville Police Sgt. Gregg Bell said the student was 17 when the relationship began and turned 18 as it continued.
“Anytime there exists a relationship where there is a position of trust or authority of a person over an individual, (the age) can be up to 18,” Bell said of the charges. The age of consent in Illinois is 18.
The aide was a personal academic tutor of the student for several years, police said, when the relationship became sexual between January and May of 2010. Investigators do not believe any other children were involved and none of the alleged misconduct took place at the Naperville school, police said.
Indian Prairie School District 204 Superintendent Kathy Birkett said in a statement that the district was contacted Aug. 31, 2010 by police, and Cox was immediately placed on administrative leave. She said Cox was terminated Oct. 19, 2010.
“We want to stress that the district takes these charges very seriously,” Birkett said in the statement. “As this is now a matter for law enforcement officials to handle, we encourage students who may have pertinent information regarding this investigation to contact the Naperville Police Department.”
Cox was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a class two felony, and is free on $50,000 bond. She is due in court in Joliet April 4.
