NEW YORK —from www.wpix.com – She’s a legendary adult film star, DJ, director and a producer. She’s none other than the multi-talented Brittany Andrews, producer of the film “Crumble,” which screened at the Manhattan Film Festival. The dramatic short film won an award at the festival for best original music. PIX11 sat down with Andrews to discuss the film of an uptown woman falling into a New York City scene outside of her comfort zone.

PIX11: “How did you get started off in the industry?”

Brittany Andrews: “Well I started off as an adult film entertainer. I started producing adult films when I was 22. About four years ago I retired from the adult film industry and moved to New York City. I did two years of film school here in New York and moved into producing mainstream stuff.”

PIX11: “You do so much. You’re a director, producer, actress and DJ. You’re a pretty big deal in the adult film industry.”

Andrews: “I’m a two time hall of fame porn star . I’ve been in the business for a long time. I’ve been semi-retired for the last four years but I still do a lot of things. I lend my name to different charity groups. I still actively participate in discussions and how I feel about different things that are going on within the business.”

PIX11: “You also have Discipline Filmworks.”

Andrews: “I’ve got a couple of different LLCs. I’ve got Britco Pictures which is my adult film production company. I started Britco Pictures when I was around 22. I used to have a 5000-square-foot studio in downtown Los Angeles that I rented out for photo and film. I owned that for ten years. Pretty much all of the entire adult business has shot there.

I was also producing of adult content underneath Britco Pictures and whether that ended up on DVD or VOD. I had some mobile deals. I don’t take the term ‘distribution whore’ lightly. I was doing a lot of my own self-distribution. I had an internet company where I had 30 websites that I was producing all of the content for. It was a lot of exclusive and niche content. I created Discipline Filmworks as my mainstream production company four years ago when I retired from the adult business. Since then I came out of retirement into semi retirement. Through Discipline Filmworks I’ve done quite a few different things from commercials, music videos, documentaries, horror films, dramas and art house.”

PIX11: “Your film Crumble was in the Manhattan Film Festival this year, tell me a little bit about it.”

Andrews: “I met the director Renata and we hit it off. She asked me if I would take a look at the script. When I started reading it I just lit up. Once I read the script I decided to jump on because it’s something that’s very gritty and dark. I liked the concept she had for how she wanted to shoot it. She wanted it to be like ‘Requiem for a Dream,’ something very edgy, dark and gritty which I have a personal taste and those are the kinds of films that I like.

The film is about a husband and wife that are very conservative and they’re both living in their boxes together. One of them wants to get out of the box. They have their anniversary and he starts leaving the box, which completely freaks her out. She ends up meeting a prostitute who she thinks is free and fabulous and has this great life. They kind of end up switching shoes. It’s really like a feminist kind of film that’s aggressive and sexual…it was a lot of hard work that went into making it.”

PIX11: “‘Crumble’ also discusses the concept of the box, and this box that Lorna is stuck in, tell me a little bit about that.”

Andrews: “She’s very comfortable living in her box, which is ‘I’m married, I live on the Upper East Side of New York, I’ve got this perfect husband and I want this perfect life.’ Everything that seems perfect in what we would consider the normal world, that would be her box.”

PIX11: “There is also Bianca, what’s her box like?”

Andrews: “Well Lorna ends up meeting Bianca in a hallway, and they exchange numbers and some kind of energy. Lorna’s life starts falling apart and so she ends up meeting Bianca thinking ‘she’s not in this box.’ Lorna’s husband is giving her a really hard time about her wanting to stick in this box and not being adventurous and trying anything new. She’s kind of happy being in her box but after being chastised so much she’s like ‘screw it, let me try and get out of my box.’ Then she meets Bianca, this girl that’s an escort and really thinks it’s a more entertaining and exciting lifestyle and that maybe her husband was right that she needed to get out of the box. She thinks ‘I’ve got to live like this girl who is really living life and going full speed.’ Then she realizes Bianca is in her own box in that she’s a prostitute, she owes money, she’s doing drugs and things she doesn’t want to be doing.”

PIX11: “The film also has a big message of empowerment.”

Andrews: “I think the empowerment message is as a female, don’t stay in whatever box…whether it be society, culture or your family, do what makes you fabulous and happy.”

PIX11: “Is there anything else you’re working on now?”

Andrews: “I’ve got a film that has won a couple of awards that’s doing a small theatrical run right now. It’s a horror film called ‘Trick of the Witch.’There’s also ‘Blindfold’ that’s still doing its film festival run. Another film that’s about to start a film festival run is ‘Stage Brother. ‘ One of my crew members that worked with me on a bunch of different shoots came to me about doing a documentary about his sister. His sister’s main goal in life was to be in Playboy Magazine.

I’ve been in Playboy Magazine so he came to me to help with the documentary. It’s kind of interesting because I kind of came on as her ‘Made’ coach and a producer to help. It’s interesting because the concept we had talked about between me and him was ‘okay, if we can’t get her in Playboy Magazine, then will she do Penthouse? If she can’t do Penthouse then will she do Hustler? If she can’t do Hustler then will she do porn? How low will she go on the totem pole to get this 15 minutes of fame that she really seems to want to have.”
