TUALATIN, Ore. — A group of residents in the Tualatin area gathered Tuesday for a town hall meeting about a strip club proposed in their neighborhood.
Neighbors said they’re hoping to stop Stars Cabaret from placing a strip club on McEwan Road, which sits on the border of Tualatin and Lake Oswego.
The owner of the building, which currently houses the Out of the Blues bar, said Stars has already signed a lease.
The strip club is still awaiting a liquor license, but nearby residents hope the Oregon Liquor Control Board doesn’t grant one. The owners of Out of the Blues said they’ll be open until at least December and possibly after that if the OLCC denies Stars’ liquor license request.
Hundreds of people packed into Tuesday night’s town hall meeting to voice their concerns about the strip club. Amelia Safley said the strip club would have a negative effect on the community.
“I live less than a mile away, my business is less than a mile away, our day care is less than a mile away and the school my child would eventually go to is less than a mile away,” Safley said. “We’re concerned with the clientele this will attract.”
And safety isn’t the only concern for some.
“Outside of just being close to my house this is going to have an effect on people’s home values,” said Emile Bonfiglio, who lives in the area. “Given the real estate market, we don’t need another thing bringing down home values.”
Bonfiglio hopes he and his neighbors can persuade the liquor board to deny the request from Stars Cabaret, which already has strip clubs open in Beaverton, Salem and Bend.
“I think it’s a poor location,” he said. “They are entitled to do it. They can just find another place to do it.”
A manager at the Stars location in Beaverton said the company had no comment Tuesday.
