from www.amazon.com – This detailed, well-written tour through the history of adult film comes from one of the giants of the field, Larry Revene [pictured], who was among the most talented cinematographers and directors of any era.
Working with other legends such as Cecil Howard, Gerard Damiano, Radley Metzger, and Chuck Vincent, the latter whom acted as a partner and mentor, Revene was directly on the front lines of the era responsible for arguably the best adult films ever made.
Revene’s efforts, which include “Jack + Jill,” “Roommates,” “That Lucky Stiff,” “Sizzle,” “October Silk,” “Barbara Broadcast,” and “Wanda Whips Wall Street” all portray particularly sophisticated narrative and visual style, and capture some of the finest acting performances in adult film history.
He also directed “Blue Magic,” a lush, beautiful film full of stunning production and costume design, and shot on location at a castle in Connecticut — and starring Candida Royalle, who went on a few years later to found Femme Productions.
Revene’s eye for detail (particularly in his attention to the role played by organized crime), as well as the early, underground “loop” era of the industry makes for a fascinating and essential read.
His recollection of the production of “D1,” the notorious loop featuring Linda Boreman before she became Linda Lovelace in “Deep Throat” alone is worth the purchase of this book. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the early days of adult film production, and for historians and scholars the book is a crucial, essential addition to the growing body of work on the topic. Revene has plans for a second, follow-up book, and it can’t arrive soon enough.
