Memphis, TN from www.wreg.com – A pornographic video featuring a young woman, who claims to be a University of Memphis student, has gone viral on the Internet.
The opening sequence has her walking out of what looks like the University Center with a school sweatshirt on.
The University of Memphis is not investigating the incident. A spokesperson released this statement:
“We are not aware of any of the details related to this video, including whether our students are even involved. If one or more of our students was involved, we want to send a strong message that the posting of this video is not in the best interest of those students. Items like this posted online have a long life, and can be seen by family, friends and future potential employers. We strongly urge our students to use good judgment, and to avoid allowing themselves to be portrayed in such a negative and exploitive light.”
If it is brought to the university’s attention that the woman in the video is a student, a spokesperson said the administration would have to review details to determine if any action should be taken.
The popularity of the sexually explicit material, and its tie to the university, upsets many students.
“They should look into it because it’s the school that’s on the line. You have students who want to transfer to the University of Memphis, and they’ll look at things like this,” said Marlaina Love.
Love, a freshman, even had a message for the woman in the video.
“I hope you seek a home in a church. And understand that what you did was not cool at all. It might be fun to you to find a promotion, but if you really want a promotion, you should go to Magic City or something like that. Because the University of Memphis is not that,” Love said.
The woman in the video seems to have posted a follow-up video on YouTube, giving advice to other women and celebrating her instant fame.
As of Wednesday night, her name was one of the top four most popular topics for Memphians on Twitter.
In her YouTube follow-up video, she is heard saying, “I’m out-beating Lil’ Wayne and Travis Porter. Wow!”
Some students don’t have a problem with the school being mentioned in the video.
“Obviously it’s less than academic. Not acceptable socially, I guess. But I don’t really see a big problem with it. I mean, these things happen everywhere. It might as well be on a college campus,” said Amanda Wilkins, a junior.
Wilkins added that “at least it puts us on the map with searches. People have crazy reasons for going to any college campus. It may as well be a porno as far as I’m concerned.”
Others were much more concerned with the reputation of the school.
Freshman Ariel Morton asked, “When I graduate, and I get ready to get a job, when they look at my college, are they going to think that we were all doing it?”
Morton also wondered about how the filming was done without others’ notice, especially since the woman exposes hereself on what looks like the University Center steps.
“I’m just surprised no one saw her.”
It is not clear where the rest of the nearly six-minute video was shot.
There is also debate about whether the woman is actually a student.
One student said he had seen her walking around the University Center area before, while others said rumors of where she stayed on campus were untrue.
