Iowa- Popular WLLR-FM morning host Jay Scott remains off the air after Bettendorf police issued a warrant for his arrest on a variety of felony sex-related charges involving a child relative. Scott, 57, whose real name is Aubrey Starcher, turned himself in to Scott County authorities on Thursday morning.
Investigators say the abuse occurred inside Starcher’s Bettendorf home between January 2004 and March 2005. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
“It’s sickening,” said Scott County Attorney Bill Davis. “If indeed the person did what he’s accused of doing, there’s something wrong. Something’s not working right in his head.”
Starcher is accused of showing graphic pornography and committing sex acts with a child relative. He asked WLLR management for personal leave on Wednesday but didn’t explain his legal troubles.
“If we had some indication, then it probably would have been something that we addressed earlier,” said Larry Rosmilso, vice president and general manager of the Quad City Radio Group. “But it just came out of the blue.”
Investigators say that the little girl told her mother, who alerted the Department of Human Services. Bettendorf Police were called to investigate on June 9.
“It always comes as a total surprise,” said Fred Pierce, neighbor.
Police formulated the case during the past month. Investigators say they’ve found strong evidence.
“Let people know that if they do anything like this, it will be thoroughly investigated,” said Det. Sgt. Keith Kimball. “They’ll be held accountable.”
Investigators say that Starcher is denying the allegations. After posting bond, he’s due back in court on Friday.
